a note on audio codecs and what you need to listen to files on this site. mp3 is a lossy codec that has become synonymous with internet audio. you can probably play back files encoded in mp3 already without having to install any new software. popular players are winamp for windows, itunes for mac, and audacious for linux. vorbis is an open source, royalty free, lossy codec that works amazingly well (really, you should try it). your current mp3 software probably already supports the vorbis format. it uses the ogg container. if you need more information on the ogg container, go here. flac is an open source, royalty free, lossless codec. this means that you don't lose any quality from the original recording (it's lossless). this is what you want for the best sound quality. if you're not already using flac, you'll need to visit the flac website to find support for your operating system. |
